Bank of Canada Interest Rate Announcement

July 12, 2023

The Bank of Canada raised its overnight rate by 25 basis points to 5 per cent this morning. In the statement accompanying the decision, the Bank noted that the Canadian economy has been stronger than expected but is expected slow as higher interest rate work their way through the economy.  On inflation, the Bank cited the recent easing of inflation to 3.4 per cent but also noted that core inflation continues to run a at 3 to 4 per cent pace and has been more persistent than anticipated.  The Bank now forecasts a return to its 2 per cent target in mid-2025 rather than in 2024.

Can Foreigners (non-residents of Canada) Buy Property in Whistler?

There is no restriction on who can buy a property in Whistler.   The 2 year restriction for foreign buyers are related to towns with larger populations and Whistler is still a small town!  Did you know that our population is just under 14,000 full time residents and approximately 10,000 more of second home owners?  We can host up to 60,000 people at prime tourism seasons (including our regular population).

Based on the 2021 census information, Whistler is not located within a "Census Metropolitan Area" nor a "Census Agglomeration" - both of which are populations of more than 100,000.
