Whistler Municipality Begin Steps to Mitigate Wildfire Risks

Despite a wetter Summer and fall a "hot" topic in Whistler remains the risk of Wildfires to properties in the area.  According to this article by Pique Newsmagazine "High-priority areas targeted for fuel thinning in the next three years include around Whistler Secondary School, around Spruce Grove, Nesters Hill, Taluswood and on the backside of the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood.

"Where we still are a bit challenged are on some of the large forested private properties, for example, around Emerald Estates—we can only do work on Crown land, so we have to find ways to work with those large property owners," said Heather Beresford (Environmental Stewardship Manager RMOW).

Joffre Lakes Survey showed a majority in favor of day-use fees read the full story in this Pique Newsmagazine Article "BC Parks ran the online survey in April, garnering just over 2,500 respondents, with the majority between the ages of 25 and 34 and hailing from the Lower Mainland.

Just over 70 per cent of respondents said they would be willing to pay a day-use fee to enter the park if they knew that the money was being reinvested into the park.

And 84 per cent of respondents said they would agree with "limiting the number of day visitors in the park" if it meant they were "guaranteed easier access."
