Each year, the Resort Municipality of Whistler receives scores of requests from people around the world seeking information on accommodation and employment who want to move to Whistler.

For employment opportunities, check out these resources:

Employment is readily found in Whistler, however, the resort is an international destination and the cost of living is 20 per cent higher than in other British Columbia towns. Long-term accommodation in Whistler can also be difficult to find – and expensive.

The best time to find a suite or condo to rent is May and June, when many seasonal employees leave after the winter season. Check the listings in the newspaper for vacancies. It's best to secure a lease through the winter, and landlords will ask for references and proof of employment. They are entitled to the first month's rent and damage deposit of up to a half-month's rent up front.

The average one-bedroom suite will rent for $900 to $1200 a month year round plus utilities. Some employers have staff accommodation available, including The Fairmont Chateau Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb.

The Whistler Housing Authority also has rental listings, in addition to a housing registry for residents who have lived in Whistler for one year or longer and want to purchase.

Whistler Community Services publishes the annual Whistler Survival Guide, offering invaluable information for newcomers to Whistler.

Residential Tenancy Office provides information on tenant and landlord rights in British Columbia.

The way that you hold title to your property has legal, tax, and estate-planning consequences. Many buyers do not receive adequate professional advice on this important aspect of property ownership.

If you are purchasing property by yourself, you will be acquiring title by sole (or "separate") ownership, single ownership, or severalty ownership. The term "severalty" does not denote more than one person - it is a legal term meaning that sole ownership is severed from all other forms of ownership.

If you are purchasing property with others, the most common forms of co-ownership are tenancy in common, joint tenancy, and community property. Tenants in common can be created when two or more related or unrelated people hold title to a property either equally or unequally. Each individual has the right to do whatever he wishes with his interest in the property. For example, he can sell his interest, give it away, or will it to someone else.

Before you take title, you should seek advice from your tax advisor and an attorney, particularly if you are buying the property with another person.
